My focus is making hand crafted glass lampwork beads, but once in a while, I make a finished piece of jewelry.
This is my first wire wrapped pendant. For a beginner piece, I am thrilled with it. This was the piece that I made when I took an online wire wrapping class. The freeform glass cabachon was made by me from Spectrum sheet art glass. I wrote a little more about it on my Spawn Of Flame Blog.
This necklace was prepared as an entry in the Metamorphosis exhibit of the ISGB. The theme was metamorphosis, or life cycle, of a glass bead from its own creation to its inclusion into a piece of fine art.
Here is my artist's statement about the piece.
Growing a Donut
One of my favorite bead shapes to make is the donut. A finished donut bead is beautifully round and well balanced.
I wondered how to merge these great donut shapes and the Metamorphosis theme. I decided to show a donut bead budding from a simple small bead and growing into a donut.
The necklace has numerous segments, starting with some small antique glass beads accented with some Swarovski crystals. The next segment morphs antique glass beads into simple lampwork beads with the crystals continuing to assist in this donut growing journey.
The next step in this fanciful progression shows the lampwork bead with a small clear donut budding from its side. In the segment closest to the focal donut, color appears on the donut bud.
Finally, there is the centerpiece large donut bead. It is playfully attached to the necklace with loops of the same gold chain which connects all of the other segments. My intent with this necklace it to show an unlikely Metamorphosis, and to hopefully evoke some laughter.
This is a necklace that I made for my sister in law under hurried conditions. I love how it turned out! I wrote a blog entry about this piece on Watch Me Create.
